We are working with a global maritime software leader that builds the platform powering critical operations in the shipping industry worldwide. They are transforming a market-leading enterprise platform with modern engineering practices and an AI-native product vision to help professionals automate routine work and make better decisions.
Role Overview
We are hiring a Senior AI Engineer to design, build, and operate AI-powered capabilities within their maritime enterprise platform. You will turn business needs into reliable product features, using shared AI services and working closely with domain teams.
This is a hands-on individual contributor role with ownership of features from technical design through production support. You will make implementation decisions independently, collaborate with the Staff AI Engineer on platform patterns and architectural trade-offs, and contribute reusable components to the shared AI platform.
You will work across backend services, data, and product integration, partnering with frontend engineers to deliver useful customer experiences. Their deployments span cloud, customer-hosted, and onboard vessel environments, so resilience and degraded connectivity are part of everyday engineering.
What You’ll Do
- Own the design and delivery of AI-powered features, from understanding the maritime workflow and prototyping through testing, rollout, and production support.
- Build C# and .NET services, APIs, and business logic that connect AI capabilities to existing applications and relational data.
- Implement retrieval-augmented generation, structured model outputs, tool invocation, and agentic workflows using shared orchestration components.
- Work with business analysts, domain experts, and product teams to define useful outcomes and clear acceptance criteria for AI features.
- Collaborate with frontend engineers working in Vue to integrate AI into workflows with clear feedback, review steps, and failure handling.
- Build automated evaluations and regression tests for model, prompt, retrieval, and tool changes, using representative business scenarios.
- Apply access controls, data privacy protections, input and output validation, and human approval where workflows perform sensitive actions.
- Instrument and troubleshoot AI workflows, improving quality, reliability, latency, and model usage cost based on production evidence.
- Implement appropriate retries, fallbacks, and recovery behavior for cloud, on-premises, and onboard deployments with intermittent connectivity.
- Contribute reusable components and improvements to the shared AI platform, collaborating on design decisions with the Staff AI Engineer.
- Review code, mentor less experienced engineers, and contribute to testing, CI/CD, documentation, and maintainable delivery practices.
What Success Looks Like
- AI features solve real operational problems and meet agreed quality and reliability criteria before release.
- You deliver complex features independently, identify risks early, and involve platform or domain specialists when decisions affect wider systems.
- Features reuse shared platform components and integrate cleanly with existing services, data, and user workflows.
- Evaluation results and production traces make failures diagnosable and help the team improve quality, latency, and cost.
- The capabilities you own protect customer data, handle service interruptions safely, and remain maintainable as requirements evolve.
What We’re Looking For
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, including independent ownership of complex production features or services.
- Hands-on experience shipping and supporting AI or LLM-powered features in production, including retrieval, tool use, or workflow orchestration.
- Strong backend engineering skills in C#/.NET or Java, including API design, service integration, automated testing, and production troubleshooting, with a willingness to work in .NET.
- Practical experience evaluating AI behavior and diagnosing issues such as hallucinations, poor retrieval, incorrect tool use, or context leakage.
- Experience with relational databases such as SQL Server or Oracle, and integrating application data into business workflows.
- Experience with cloud platforms, with Azure preferred, and familiarity with CI/CD, Git, monitoring, and secure development practices.
- Ability to work across backend, data, and frontend boundaries, collaborating with engineers using frameworks such as Vue, React, or Angular.
- Sound judgment about reliability, security, maintainability, and cost, with the ability to explain technical trade-offs clearly.
- A collaborative approach, a willingness to learn maritime business processes, and a track record of dependable delivery and mentoring.
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with Azure OpenAI, Azure AI Search, vector search, or AI orchestration frameworks.
- Experience with Vue 3 or delivering full stack features in enterprise applications.
- Experience with containerized services, event-driven architectures, or workflow orchestration systems.
- Experience supporting on-premises, edge, or offline-capable systems with intermittent connectivity.
- Experience in maritime, logistics, ERP, or other operational environments where access control and auditability matter.
Why This Role Matters
This role turns their AI platform into practical capabilities that customers can rely on. By combining strong software engineering with applied AI and an understanding of maritime workflows, you will help teams deliver intelligent features that improve daily operations and remain reliable in demanding deployment environments.
