The challenge

A new energy gateway, a rare combination of skills

GASLOG was establishing a new energy gateway in Greece and Southeastern Europe. Its large-scale floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) conversion project would contribute to regional energy security, while its expanding fleet needed stronger operational support.

The business needed leaders with FSRU conversion experience, operational expertise and technical knowledge. These skills were scarce in a competitive LNG market.

11 weeks from mandate to signed offer; 2 years 7 months in role with the mandate complete; one candidate placed on an exclusive mandate.

The takeaway: A pioneering conversion needed experienced LNG leaders.

The brief

Leadership for the project and the fleet

The brief covered three complementary appointments: Project Director (Conversions), Fleet Support Manager and Deputy Project Manager. Together, the hires needed to oversee the first conversion, strengthen fleet operations and provide technical and design expertise.

Joanne Massios, Head of HR & ESG, partnered with Executive Integrity on the search. During her tenure, GASLOG had grown from two to 39 LNG carriers. Understanding both the technical requirements and the company’s values was central to the assignment.

The specification: new builds, conversions, process engineering, fleet maintenance, and technical and operational detail.

The takeaway: Three roles, aligned to one conversion and fleet growth plan.

The placement

Three complementary appointments

Stephen Migliara joined as Project Director (Conversions). Based in Houston, he brought extensive LNG and FSRU experience, including senior responsibility for asset management and fleet operations across 11 FSRUs. His background included new builds, conversions, process engineering, maintenance and operational matters.

Konstantinos Marketos joined as Fleet Support Manager. With more than 20 years’ experience, he had overseen over 80 vessels across four fleets and approximately 60 people. His remit was to strengthen fleet operations and structures while delivering critical projects.

Ogun Kasali joined as Deputy Project Manager. A qualified Naval Architect and experienced Site and Project Manager, he brought more than 20 years in marine and oil and gas work, including three completed FSRU conversions, new buildings, major conversions, repairs and commissioning.

Brief against track record: new builds and conversions matched to an 11-FSRU portfolio; process engineering matched to asset management at the largest FSRU operator; fleet maintenance matched to fleet operations at portfolio scale; technical and operational detail matched to leadership on high-value marine assets.

The takeaway: Stephen Migliara, Konstantinos Marketos and Ogun Kasali joined GASLOG.

The result

Specialist experience where it was needed

The appointments brought project leadership, fleet management and technical design capability into GASLOG’s team. Stephen was appointed to manage and oversee the first FSRU conversion; Konstantinos to support efficient fleet operations; and Ogun to add technical and design expertise to the conversion.

Together, they formed a team whose LNG, shipping and FSRU backgrounds matched the demands of GASLOG’s project and growth plans.

project timeline: appointed July 2022; departure from Seatrium’s Singapore yard on 26 November 2023; arrival in Greece on 17 December 2023; mooring complete on 23 December 2023; commercial operations begin 1 October 2024. Sample figures: 155,000 cubic metres, 5.5 billion cubic metres per year, and 2 years 3 months from appointment to operations.

The takeaway: The right combination of conversion, fleet and technical expertise.
